If the person who got the most votes became president, Trump would never have become president.
Most Americans didn't want this. They saw that this was a bad idea, and they were overruled by a bad institution. The result has been a calamity.
And yet we've done nothing to close the underlying vulnerability. Despite losing by 7 million votes, if a few tens of thousands of votes in a few key states had switched, Trump would've been reelected. This is not a good system.
