Vaccinating people in prison is not only humane, but an issue of public health. Yet politicians from both parties, in almost every state, are refusing to do it. Important story by @jessicaschulb

Well it was more or less exactly as horrible as we imagined.
Would like to put my stimulus check on the over for James Joyce references during this presidency, whatever the number is.
strong signs that the lesson the democratic party learned from 2009 is not "we should dismantle DHS the moment we get a chance to do so" but "we should make sure it pursues the far right, too"
not great, imo

Trump’s Labor Dept just issued a last-minute ‘guidance letter’ stating that local news reporters are doing ‘creative’ work and therefore can be excluded from minimum wage and overtime protections. This is something unnamed publishers would have asked of the administration:

Where does the American far right go from here? (by @nickrobinsearly)
Joe Biden takes over after the most serious challenge to American democracy in decades. Lawmakers+experts say one of his biggest cabinet picks may weaken US democratic values even more. Ahead of Lloyd Austin's confirmation hearing, here's what's at stake:

Protesto agora em frente ao Palácio do Planalto contra o presidente Bolsonaro.
On the day federal regulators approve the emergency use of two coronavirus vaccines, protesters call out Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who has acted as an anti-vax activist for the better part of the past 12 months.

Ugh. Bowser asked whether DC will return to normal after the extreme security measures in place right now. Says there will be a “new normal”
The only part of any of this that should be normal is the lack of cars.
ICYMI: I talked two of the Kentuckians who are trying to get the state’s Dem governor impeached over COVID measures. A KY legal expert says the effort has “zero merit.” Question is: Will the GOP-controlled legislature go along with it anyway?

All the evidence you need that Trump incited a riot comes directly from the rioters themselves.

Even Manaus, a heavily pro-Bolsonaro city, has its pans out for the president tonight
Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Oregon and other states have announced plans to close state capitol buildings this weekend and into next week amid fears of possible violence.
A huge part of the US safety net is obscure tax credits that pay annual refunds. Maybe do more checks?
“The checks have been wildly popular,” @MattBruenig says. “Now is the time to seize the energy and move the tax credits into a real benefit program.”

Replying to @BunkiePerkins: Dalè Earnhardt
A bunch of my colleagues talked to some of the countless people whose lives have been irreparably harmed by Trump's rhetoric and policies. The cruelty and pain will be the enduring legacy of his presidency.
I wrote about fears among many in Brazil that the Capitol riots offered a glimpse of the country's future, thanks to Bolsonaro's fomenting of similar distrust and extremism, and his peddling of all the same conspiracies, as he looks toward 2022 elections.
