JUST IN: President Biden signs executive order directing the Justice Dept. not to renew contracts with private prisons.
Private prisons create perverse incentives to profit off of and maintain a broken system—it must end. I’m glad to see this administration is taking steps to end the use of private prisons at the federal level.
The @Princeton Prize in Race Relations recognizes high school students who have improved race relations in their schools or communities through their volunteer efforts. I encourage students to apply or nominate someone you know now through March 1st:

BREAKING: President Biden has ended the ban on transgender military service set in place under the Trump administration.
A grateful nation salutes all who have served and hoped for this moment.
Transgender Americans who choose to serve in our military are heroes—just like all of our service members—who risk their lives to defend us. Trump’s unjust ban was an affront to our values & undermined our national security. I’m grateful that justice and equality have prevailed.
I’ve introduced a resolution with @SenatorMenendez that would recognize today as Maternal Health Awareness Day We all have a responsibility to address this growing public health crisis & racial bias in our health care system.
Maternal mortality in America demands urgent action. It’s also a matter of justice—indigenous & Black women are two & three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes.
Today, join NBEC and others in observing Maternal Health Awareness Day, a tradition that originated in @ACOG District III and is now a national effort. Learn how you can take part in raising awareness about the maternal health crisis. #123ForMoms.

48 years ago today, Roe v. Wade affirmed the legal right to abortion. But the fight for reproductive rights continues—we must remain vigilant and ensure that all people have the guaranteed right to make their own health care decisions and access to quality, affordable care.
Grateful for your leadership, Majority Leader @SenSchumer.

BREAKING: President Biden just rescinded the cruel Muslim ban that targeted Africans.
People will now be allowed to reunite with their families, celebrate life events, receive life-saving health care treatment, and pursue educational and career opportunities.
Grateful for the activists from across our nation who never stopped fighting to end the disastrous & racist Muslim Ban and that this administration moved swiftly to end this xenophobic policy that runs so counter to our values. We must ensure a ban like this never happens again.
America must once again lead on the existential threat of climate change—and I’m grateful for this administration that understands our grave responsibility and is putting faith in science and charting a path forward to tackle this issue head on.

Sen. Blumenthal of Connecticut is the first to mention Gateway in Mayor Pete Buttigieg's hearing, asks for a commitment to move this project.
PB response: "I've heard this loud and clear from you [and others] ... and look forward to working with you on this to move it forward."
I’m thrilled that New Jersey will have a partner in the Department of Transportation committed to making the critical investments in infrastructure we need.
There’s no time to waste to get this pandemic under control to save lives. I’m grateful that the Biden Administration has taken quick action & invoked the Defense Production Act to supercharge our efforts to produce & distribute vaccines, medical & PPE supplies across our nation.

As I traveled to Washington from Los Angeles, I thought about my parents and the sacrifices they made to secure the American Dream for their son. I promise to work tirelessly in the Senate so that every Californian has a shot at achieving their own American Dream.
My dear friend Kamala Harris has broken the glass ceiling throughout her career—and today she's done it again becoming the first female, Black and South Asian Vice President in our nation's history. What a historic and profound moment for our country.
